The Branches Project is run from a base in Goa, India and aims to provide employment opportunities and charitable services to the poorest and exploited workers of India.
The project utilizes the notion of “charitable enterprise” to achieve its ends. “Charitable enterprise” is a business that runs solely for the end of charity: employing people who would otherwise live and/or work in undignified conditions and providing a charitable service to aid the wider community.
The primary project is the Food Distribution Program. This program employs two workers per base to purchase, package and distribute staple foodstuffs and hygiene products for those who are otherwise too poor to purchase enough to sustain adequate nutrition. Programs are based in Catholic parishes and recipients are determined by the parish Priest. Each worker is paid approximately $AU100 a month and each food package costs approximately $AU20 a month to feed a family of four.
It is the aim to establish the Food Distribution Program in Goa, then Mumbai, then gradually further in villages throughout India, especially targeting areas blighted with drought and starvation.
